Director of the Croatian National Tourist Board Nico Bulic stated that this year has seen its popularity with holidaymakers rise to a new level.

"Between 2007 and 2010 visitor numbers were rising - in 2009 we had a financial sacrifice, but we managed to get a better volume than 2008. 2010 was a step forward and in 2011 we continued with the positive trend," he said.

Mr Bulic added that a total of 11 million people will have visited before the end of the year, not taking into account the additional numbers stopping on from cruise ships in the Mediterranean.

He noted that despite the ongoing global economic crisis the country has fared well in terms of tourism and pointed out that it has managed to recover "strongly" from the negative impact the war had.
